Linsey Gray Puckett is a fine artist and designer based in Asheville, North Carolina

Seeking respite from the pressures of her design career, Linsey turned to her earliest passion. One day while cleaning her workspace, a piece of charcoal fell onto a stack of scrap crafting birch. Completely captivated by the mark it left on the wood, Linsey soon discovered its unique textures and unpredictability, offering the creative therapy she had been longing for.

Linsey began her return to art in 2023. She attributes the sustainability of her current career as a full-time artist to the diverse creative skills and experiences she accumulated during her preceding fifteen years in graphic and interior design.

Sought after by collectors nationwide, Linsey’s work has appeared in interior design publications and has been exhibited throughout the Southern Appalachian and Western North Carolina region, including a notable first solo exhibition and installation, Breathe Now.

Linsey’s studio is located in Asheville, North Carolina in the River Arts District's historic Cotton Mill Studios.

Beyond the easel, Linsey translates select artworks across home textiles, bespoke upholstered furnishings, and statement wall coverings. She and her husband live in a cozy A-frame just outside the city with their 4-yr-old daughter and three dogs.

Artist Statement

Drawing inspiration from the often overlooked moments in nature, Linsey’s work explores finding peace amidst uncertainty. Through attention to overgrown trail banks, heavy fog, and tangled branches, she encourages mindfulness and quiet contemplation.

In harmony with the wood grain, she embraces the intrinsic nature of charcoal and soft pastels, welcoming unpredictability and imperfection into her process. This therapeutic practice, which includes turning collected twigs into charcoal, sealing each piece with a cold wax by hand, and building every frame from hand-selected raw material, mirrors the natural world and fosters an acceptance of the unexpected within herself and those that admire her work.

Her mission is restorative: Through her process, she invites discomfort, reflection, and possibility. Through her art, she aims to provide grounding in a desensitized world, reminding us all that a sense of awe remains accessible in the simplest materials, methods, and moments.

The Longer Story

Before finding her way back to her art practice, Linsey built a design-focused career encompassing graphic, editorial, and interior design. Her creative history spans various mediums and methods, forming a portfolio diverse in discipline and clientele.

Linsey spent much of her childhood with pencil or paintbrush in hand. Art was the clear direction until anxieties of a “career path” set in. After one year as a Studio Art and Design major, Linsey turned her focus to the built environment and earned a BFA in Interior Architecture.

Expecting to begin her professional career in the interior design field, her path took a sudden pivot into the world of print and marketing. Serving Graphic Designer and Creative Director roles, she worked closely with local, regional, and national brands on everything from branding, to packaging, to signage.

While learning to balance her time between agency and freelance work, a new opportunity to serve as the Art Director for trade publications Designers Today, Home Accents Today, and other titles reignited her love for interiors.

For more than a decade, Linsey fought through self-inflicted pressure to choose between graphic and interior design disciplines until she gradually began to combine her varied skill sets, allowing her to consider each project from a more holistic perspective and overlap services as needed.

From logo, to print collateral, to physical place of business, Linsey and collaborative colleagues have strengthened clients’ connections with their customers through creative, communicative, and cohesive experiences.

Linsey’s focus shifts again—this time back toward her earliest passions. Today, she approaches fine art and surface design through a seasoned lens, drawing from a diverse set of creative skills and experiences.
